April 2002

World On The Square
August 10, 2002, from 4-8 PM
This year will be the third annual World On The Square Family Festival!

Why...
...are we featuring Hispanic heritage in this newsletter? Partly because Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is coming up and partly to get a jump-start on next year. Our first newsletter of next year won't be in your hands until September, and September is Hispanic Heritage Month--this newsletter gives you materials to address that next year. According to Infoplease.com, "Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because this day marks the anniversary of independence for five Hispanic countries *Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18."
See you next year!

Tell us what you think!
Is there anything you would like to see us do differently? Love it? Not? We need your feedback! Email Marian Allen, write to us at P. O. Box 853, Corydon, Indiana, or put your thoughts in writing and give it to your principal in an envelope with CUERC on it. If you would be willing to join us for a summer planning meeting, give us contact information and we will be delighted to welcome you!

The History of Cinco de Mayo
"During the 1960's, a group of Mexican American students at California State University, Los Angeles, held the first Cinco de Mayo celebration in the United States." The day commemorates the Battle of Pueblo, fought on May 5, 1862, between outnumbered Mexican forces and French invading forces. "Cinco de Mayo is a day when Mexican Americans reaffirm their roots and celebrate with sights and sounds of Mexico."
