One World Global Calendar
"Every Day is celebrated somewhere around the Planet"
We had planned to feature a calendar of holiday celebrations in each issue this year, but we found there were too many to include! So here is a site that lists festivals, celebrations, and holy days for many countries and faith traditions, with a current listing posted each month. It's a great place for you to go to select what you feel would be appropriate for your classroom. You could choose from the possibilities and have your class research your choices, perhaps in cooperation with other classes, and share your findings across disciplines and age groups.
Interrelated Projects for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and African American History Month
Pennsylvania middle school teacher Scott D. Feifer organized a scavenger hunt that required students to search the library to find facts about African Americans and African American culture. They also selected quotes about peace from King and Mahatma Gandhi, another man of peace who was also a victim of violence.
An art teacher provided pictures of King and Gandhi, and copies of paintings reflecting peace. Each of Feifer's classes chose a different picture and cut it into squares--one piece for each student. Each student drew his or her section of the picture onto a larger square of paper.
"When it came time to assemble the murals, I had my students sit in a circle on the floor....Each student then came forward to add her or his piece to the puzzle....Later, we displayed the mosaics in the hall of our middle school, along with the original portraits, information sheets about Gandhi and King, and some of their peace-related quotes. In this way, the entire school gained a new appreciation of the connection between these two peacemakers as well as their contributions to society."
