Membership & Meetings
Community Unity meets on the second Thursday of every month at the Harrison County Community Foundation Building. Meetings are at 10:00 AM in odd-numbered months and at 7:00 p.m. in even-numbered months. Membership is open to all who believe in the value of our resolution. In the event that the time or location are changed, notice will be given on this page. Please note that regular CU meetings are no longer held at Gerdon Youth Center.

For CU monthly meetings, whenever possible we invite members of the Harrison County and Kentuckiana community to present talks on topics of interest to Community Unity. Below is an index of some of our previous speakers, video showings, discussion panels, and such.

February 14, 2008 - Presentation by Carol Smith on US Civil Rights Activist Amelia Boynton Robinson. Adobe PDF, 30.4KB
Harrison County native Carol Smith tells about her meeting Amelia Boynton Robinson, a civil rights activist for over eighty years. Amelia, now in her late 90's, was one of the Selma residents that helped organize the famous march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. She tells her life story in her autobiography, Bridge Over Jordan.

May 10, 2007 - Presentation by David Whittington, manager of Tyson Foods Corydon, Indiana complex. HTML
Whittington discusses how diversity impacts the Tyson corporation and the local operations here in Corydon. Welcoming a diverse workforce improves corporate performance, helps to attract and retain the top talent, and is necessary to find workers to fill the labor needs of the future. Tyson's workforce of 560 employees makes it the second largest employer in Harrison County; about 12% of its employees are Hispanic.

April 12, 2007 - Presentation by Sandy Gettelfinger, Director of Madera Ministries, on the National Hispanic Leadership Summit. HTML
Sandy presents information she received from this March 2007 conference in Washington DC. Immigration was a big issue, where enforcing immigration laws conflicts with American industries being able to find the workers they need. Sandy also discusses the educational requirements in preparing our young people to become productive workers in the 21st Century.

March 8, 2007 - Presentation by Neama Mohamed "Azza" Eriby and Rev. Scott Hill on Egypt. HTML
Eriby tells of her family's experience emigrating to the US, which took a total of 11 years. During those years, she waited in Alexandria, raised a child and completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. Rev. Hill speaks about his visit to Egypt with Hands Along the Nile Developmental Services (HANDS), based in Washington, DC, and the changes he saw in Egypt since the time when he lived there in the mid-80's.

February 8, 2007 - Presentation by Rosaria Heitkemper about her emigration from Sicily. HTML
Rosaria is the second in her family to immigrate to the US, after her great grandfather succeeded in 1912 but his wife and daughter had to return to Sicily. Rosaria has raised three children here in America, and her children have dual American-Italian citizenship.

December 13, 2005 - Presentation by Janet Mann, the Director of Program Development at AIDS Interfaith Ministries of Kentuckiana, Inc. (AIM) HTML
Janet Mann tells about how AIM serves the HIV/AIDS-affected population in the greater Louisville area, including the surrounding Indiana counties. The organization has an impressive list of support activities that they keep going despite a lean budget through the use of many volunteers.

May 12, 2005 - Presentation by Terry Taylor, Executive Director of Interfaith Paths to Peace. HTML
Taylor heads one of three inter-faith organizations in Louisivlle, Kentucky. His group is specifically oriented to encourage peace and prevent violence based on religious misunderstanding, and it asks its followers to take a Vow of Non-violence. Taylor says that not only should inter-faith encounters identify the commonalities among various religions, but also identify the differences so that religions can learn from each other.

February 10, 2005 - Presentation by Christina Gettelfinger and Sandy Gettelfinger, about thier trip to Mexico. HTML
This mother and daughter did get in a little sight-seeing at the Aztec pyramids, but mainly they traveled from one family to another bringing gifts from relatives who now live here in Harrison County, Indiana. ."

January 13, 2005 - Presentation by Ray Saylor, Chief Marshal of Milltown, Indiana about human smuggling. HTML
Saylor tells of the first case of human smuggling in Indiana, which took place here in Harrison County in 2004. A family was bringing Mexican nationals here, then exploiting them financially. Saylor also gives tips about how community members might detect similar smuggling operations.

December 9, 2004 - Presentation by Matthew Hayes, Ed.D, Executive Director of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation. HTML
Dr. Hayes discusses the history and make-up of the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, and its annual Festival of Faiths. He says that inter-faith dialogue must take place at both the personal level and the organizational level.

October 14, 2004 - Presentation by Ben Jones, Executive Director of the Louisville International Culture Center (LICC). HTML
LICC has several programs to encourage inter-cultural understanding, which Mr. Jones surveys. The aftermath of 9/11 has placed greater emphasis on dialogue with Muslim and Arabic countries.
